About this deal

An interesting, entertaining and engaging story as usual from Michael Morpurgo - but he is not at his best here.

You can also read about his life in War Child to War Horse,a collaborative biography with Maggie Fergusson. Write diary entries from the point of view of a certain character, perhaps the Germans or the Reynolds Your KS2 class will use the table below to sort the words that end in the suffix -ing. The words can all be found in Chapter 4. The novel is about a rural couple named Junior and Hen who, one evening, get a visit from a stranger from a big city corporation. The man is named Terrance, and he comes bearing news that Junior has been longlisted for space exploration, meaning that he’ll be one of the first people to temporarily live in the Installation — a kind of space station set up by the private corporation Terrance works for. As it would turn out, Junior does eventually get selected — but where does that leave Hen? Well, thankfully, Terrance has a replacement Junior for her that acts, talks and thinks just as the real Junior does. And, that, my friends, is where the goings get freaky. Hen gets more and more reserved and standoff-ish as Junior prepares for his day in the sun, and pretty soon the duo is fighting just without resorting to throwing things at each other. The style of writing was poor, I felt, but there are plenty of strong opportunities for role-play and research around the book related to WW2. I can imagine writing this as a play with my class I absolutely love Michael Morpurgo’s novels. I am far older than the target audience (being in my fifties) but I thoroughly enjoy his tales and style of writing. He draws the reader into his tales and we ‘live’ through the books as we read.

English KS2: Friend or Foe by Michael Morpurgo - BBC Teach

It offers the argument that being a German soldier during the Second World War (any war, in fact) does make you an evil person. I also like the idea of asking the question: what happens when you save someone you hate? The novel is set during World War II and follows two evacuees to the West Country. The boys find themselves on a farm. “They were no longer going away, they were arriving.” Life is all about perspective. The boys turned a negative into a positive. Like you and me. Yes. We all are. And a simple fact like that you're english or german or whatever doesn't say anything about your personality and character. In the tradition of Goodnight Mr Tom, Carrie's War, and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Friend or Foe is a novel that takes children to the heart of a tumultuous period in history.Michael's books have been translated into many languages including Chinese, Bulgarian and Hungarian, Hebrew and Japanese. He travels all over the UK and abroad talking to people of all ages at literary festivals, telling his stories and encouraging them to tell theirs. Friend or Foe is a historical fiction novel about World War II, that grips the reader from the start. This book allows the reader to develop their knowledge and understanding of the second world war, through the description in the book. Friend or Foe would be suitable for class based reading in year 4 and 5, and independent reading in year 6. The theme of the story offers the opportunity for cross-curricular work in history when studying WW2, especially evacuees. A trip to the War museum to look at the different planes in the story could be a great trip for Literacy and History. Friend or Foe may not be a Childs choice of book to read, however once reading the children will love it and be eager to read on. Many activities can be created such as:
