That said, this would probably be a good intro collection for someone brand new to Junji Ito's works because it covers a wide range of his storytelling styles - some more fantastical, some bizarro, and some downright sad and scary - and would give a new reader a really good idea of what to expect. While you can see how he’s improved over time, the essence of his horror work is still here, and this is still definitely a worthy read. Ito’s artwork is always bouncing from the ethereal beauty of ghosts and nature to the disgusting body horror and gore of an R-rated film. I’ve mentioned before that I’ve become a little lukewarm on Ito’s work as a whole, while still loving some of his major works.

The images of the dream self doing this are visceral, imaginative, and downright amazing, making this a particularly creepy story.

Junji Ito is (as always) the king of body horror graphic novels that are both terrifying, fascinating and completely ridiculous and this book is no exception. At Books2Door, we believe that reading is a fundamental skill that every child should have to help improve their vocabulary, grammar, and critical thinking skills. The final and titular story, “Deserter,” is about a military deserter hiding in Japan years after World War II, because the people hiding him convince him the war is still going on. A Father’s Love’ works well because it’s one of the longer stories, and takes plenty of time to flesh out its tale of a tyrannical patriarch who has a unique hold on his children. Some of the stories seem to prefigure his better-known work, and could perhaps be seen as earlier versions, or am I imagining that connection? Before Uzumaki, Ito was best known for Tomie, a comic series about a beautiful, teasing and eternally youthful high school girl who inspires her stricken admirers to murder each other in fits of jealous rage.
