Mason slides in enough insight about life and love so that you will feel satisfied with the time spent! If anything, it was because I loved and believed in the characters so much… I just wanted better for them both! Houghton also presents a lovely set of secondary characters, to the people Eleanor meets in art class to her gorgeous sister Freya and wonderful, slightly eccentric mum Angela. In the past, I would have probably said yes, because let’s be honest, what’s worse than spending the rest of your life by yourself? What I loved most about this novel though, was the influence of their families in their lives - and how differently this impacted them both. Though her own romantic life has always been fraught with uncertainty, it is her job to forge romantic connections between clients. Very often, secondary characters are just that but — in this book — they provide, sometimes much needed, comedic relief and help the plot glide along nicely (which helped when it needed a bit of a push). I cannot wait to see what Emily produces next, this is another author that has made it to my watch list!
I really felt for Fin and Elles with everything they went through; they were very believable and engaging, and all aspects of their story are engaging and well-written. While the material gift has a shelf life and may soon lose its monetary value, the feelings and intentions given with it—and reciprocated—sustain our collective well-being. The author compares that exciting instant attraction kind of love with dependable, deep friendship love. Their friendship has been forged in life's hardships as they both experienced loss when parents faded from their lives. The sister, who is not sure of her relationship, and the father, a lovesick, are very funny, and each one of them are very supportive. In it, we are introduced to Eleanor Levy and Fin Taylor — two childhood friends who have lost touch but, through pretty bleak circumstances, find their paths crossing again.
