About this deal

I recommend this book to girls and boys age 9+ because kids under nine might get scared of this book when it is read. This is just amazingly well told. Morpurgo retains the dramatic poetry of the original, the bite and strength of the narrative, and the Christian content. My kids are absolutely loving it, I feel almost as if they are reading the original. Beowulf is one of the most important texts in Old English and is believed to date from somewhere between 975 and 1025 - around the time of Alfred the Great. The author is unknown. The acclaimed author and illustrator of SIR GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT return with an exhilarating edition of Britain’s oldest epic. Long ago there was a Scandinavian warrior who fought three evils so powerful they could destroy whole kingdoms. Standing head and shoulders above his comrades, Beowulf single-handedly saves the land of the Danes from a merciless ogre named Grendel and then from his sea-hag mother. But it is his third terrible battle, with the death-dragon of the deep, in which he truly meets his match. Lovers of heroes, monsters, and the drama of battle will find this retelling as enthralling as it is tragic. Some off the illustrations are still running around in my head. I would recommend this to boys age 10+ . I loved Beowulf it’s a great book – you would definitely like it ! Beowulf, a prince of Geatland, hears of the Danes’ suffering and gains permission from his king to sail to their assistance. There's a lot for the money here, but it would have been much more helpful if it was all on one power point, as it's hard to decipher the sequence. The slides could do with formatting, and videos embedding, but the quality of the lesson materials is good. Some typos e.g. affect/effect. This is a 3 week + Writing Root using Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo and illustrated by Michael Foreman where children get an opportunity to discuss legends and the importance of heroic poetry in early European literature. Morpurgo added: “Storymakers and storytellers like Barrie, and like all the previous winners of this award, have given us the hope and faith children need, we need, to keep flying, have sustained us through dark and troubled times, have banished doubt. To touch the lives of children, to witness their listening and reading silence, is reward enough in itself. This is simply the icing on the cake.” Spelling Seeds have been designed to complement Writing Roots by providing weekly, contextualised sequences of sessions for the teaching of spelling that include open-ended investigations and opportunities to practise and apply within meaningful and purposeful contexts, linked (where relevant) to other areas of the curriculum and a suggestion of how to extend the investigation into home learning. We just didn't enjoy the story. We read through it because it fits our history, but it's as gory as I remembered, and taken out of the Old English, there seemed less reason to read it together, anyway. urn:oclc:319890298 Republisher_date 20120724173231 Republisher_operator [email protected] Scandate 20120724093608 Scanner scribe4.shenzhen.archive.org Scanningcenter shenzhen Usl_hit true Worldcat (source edition) Hello Yellow - 80 Books to Help Children Nurture Good Mental Health and Support With Anxiety and Wellbeing - I adore this book because it is a very adventurous, scary book .It includes action, some violence and is historical. I think boys would love to read this book, because of its different features { like the sadness, the revenge …} The story itself revolves around the Scandinavian warrior known as Beowulf and his deeds against three monster antagonists: Grendel; Grendel's mother, a sea-hag; and, finally, the death-dragon of the deep. All creatures of darkness! Beowulf is probably the most altruistic hero I've heard of. It's an heroic legend and major themes are honor, loyalty, bravery and glory. It's also bloody and dramatic. You can totally guess what's gonna happen but it's worthy and amazingly well told. Michael Morpurgo is not some random fella, it seems. Ever seen the movie "War Horse"?
