Before putting the posts into the hole, I transferred a mark to the other piece. It is fairly critical to get these holes correctly aligned as the post has to go into both of them. I didn't have any dowel centers small enough so I found a self-tapping screw in the surplus screw box with an outside thread diameter the same as my hole size. I cut it to a little over 1/2" long and set it in the hole, pointy side up. I used it to mark the center of the matching hole in the other wood. Then the post could be screwed in. Next I drilled the holes in the end piece using the 5/16" bit. The holes need to be a bit over 1" deep. Again the depth isn't critical as long as it's long enough to go into the area where the third hole will be drilled. Apart from very experienced cabinet makers nobody will get that fine a tolerance when but joining materials For this project, three bits are needed: 3/16" and 5/16" in a twist or brad pointed bit and a 5/8" Forstner bit. in- 1 multi-function drill guide , for drilling dowel holes and vertical holes. Good thought! Also makes me wonder about door handles hitting the wall, I imagine the doors have to open completely for the drawers to come out on the left side. Where can I buy a metal jig that will accuratley drill these holes? If anyone has a better way I would appreciate some help. (and please go easy on me, more help than criticism!!!)
